3 Ways To STAY Humble

Staying humble is the key to happiness. It focuses on helping others and serving God instead of ourselves. In my last post, I talked about the dangers of pride. But then how do you stay humble instead?

What is humility?

Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is fine to be proud of something you have achieved.

Humility is spending less time thinking about yourself. It is spending less time thinking selfishly, which is pride.

Instead, you could think about helping others and think selflessly.

Here are 3 ways to stay humble:

1. Humble Conversations

What I am about to tell you is one of the most effective ways that I know to stay humble.

Imagine these 2 simple situations:

Situation 1 – You are talking you someone who you want to impress. You have a high level of social anxiety because you want them to like you.

Situation 2 – You are talking to someone who you couldn’t care less about. You don’t like their personality. They smell. There is nothing they can offer you in return for your time. So you have no social anxiety, you just want to get away from them.

In both situations, you are full of pride! You are only thinking about yourself. About what YOU can get from the conversation.

When you are in any conversation with anyone, talk to them as if you don’t care about what you can gain! Focus all your efforts on caring for them. Forget about yourself for a moment and draw all the attention on them. On their victories. On their problems.

It will destroy your anxiety because you won’t care what people think of you. You will only care about helping them.

2. Don’t Expect A Reward

Help others without expecting anything in return.

When you serve others you humble yourself. But serving others for their money or their approval, means you are only serving yourself.

Don’t help the poor, or give them money, because you want to gain social approval. Do it because you love them and care for them, just as Jesus loves and cares for you.

3. Stand Before The Throne Of God

No one can come into God’s presence and stand proudly before Him. He is the so great, so powerful and so indescribable, that it is impossible to be proud before Him!

Being proud before God is like saying, “I can do it better on my own.”

Imagine saying that to the God who could make you fall to the ground dead, at any moment in time!

Pray! Come before Him humbly. Acknowledge that without Him you are nothing. It is God who has given you all your life, time and talents.

So, don’t boast about these things to others, boast about Him!

1 Peter 5:6 says:

‘Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.’

How humble do you think you are?

Being humble isn’t easy. I would encourage you to read the list of the ‘Fifty Fruits of Pride’ on the internet. It opened my eyes to a lot of areas in my life where I wasn’t being humble.
