There are thousands of situations in our daily lives where we have to be patient. In other words: we have to endure an unpleasant experience for a certain length of time without losing our MIND! Here are 7 ways you can be more patient:
1. Recognize You’re Being Impatient
The MOST important point that will have a massive impact on your patience is to recognize you are impatient!
When we are impatient we often don’t even realize it. Our head is moving too fast for us to know we are irritating to other people. Then we overreact to a situation.
Only when you realize, do you have room in your mind to cope with the situation in a more effective way.
2. Count to 10
You’ve probably heard this tip many times before, but it’s simple and works!
Counting to 10 gives you enough time for the initial impulse to die down and stops you from doing anything crazy or irrational.
It means you make a MUCH better decision!
James 1:9 says:
‘You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.’
Be slow to speak and you will help control your anger and impatience. Count to 10 in your head! When you finish it will be like going into the situation with a fresh perspective!
3. Practice Patience
Imagine you’re in the kind of situation where you think to yourself: This is the BIGGEST and most PAINFUL waste of my time and energy, I just want to DIE!
USE that opportunity to practice patience. The more you practice, the more patient you will become.
These kind of opportunities are golden!
James 1:2 says:
‘Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.’
4. Love People
The Bible uses many different words to define love. But the first one is ‘patient’.
Practice putting others needs before your own because that is what it means to love someone. If someone does something annoying, react with love. Forgive them for not being perfect.
Jesus commands us to love each other.
John 15:12 says:
‘My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.’
It is the second most important commandment in the ENTIRE Bible!
5. Be Grateful
When it comes to being patient, there is always someone in a worse situation than you. People who will have to wait a LOT longer than you to get what they want.
Think about those who are serving life sentences in prison!
In the Bible, a man named Job had unbelievable patience. His children, servants, and fortune were all taken away from him.
But still, he waited and trusted God.
Isaiah 40:31 says:
‘But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.’
After Jobs waiting period was over he was given twice what he had before.
Job 42:10 says:
‘After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.’
When we are in pain or stressed, it’s in our nature to hold our breath. This is BAD!
Breath deeply through your nose and out through your mouth. Do this again and again until the frustration starts to leave your body.
Remember that God is in complete control of the situation. You alone can’t even control your next breath. So do what you can through God’s strength and breath…
Acts 17:25 says:
‘He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.’
7. Use the Time
Instead of wishing you could use this time more productively, use it more productively!
If you are waiting in line, answer emails or messages on your phone. Or TALK to someone! If you hate wasting time, do whatever you can to not waste the time.
Time is precious. But we will always have those situations where we are waiting in line.
See how resourceful can you be in those situations. Challenge yourself to MAXIMIZE the amount of stuff you can get done when you are waiting in line or at the bus stop.
Your future self will thank you.
First, recognize that you are impatient!
Count to ten in your head to reset your mind.
Use every opportunity to practice patience.
Treat others in the way you want to be treated, love them.
You don’t have to wait years, be grateful.
If nothing else works, use the time wisely.
