7 Ways To Have A Better Conversation
7 Ways To Have A Better Conversation
Most of the time we struggle to have a good conversation with strangers. It’s a fact! It either ends in an awkward silence or you never engage with them. So, here are 7 ways to have a better conversation:
1. Start The Conversation
Why is this included in the list? Isn’t it obvious you have to start the conversation?
90% of the time people don’t make the leap from not talking, to asking the first question! Imagine the amount of deep personal conversations we could have if we took every good opportunity to talk to people.
You might be waiting at a bus stop, in a waiting room or at a social event. There are countless opportunities to start a conversation!
Take the opportunity!
2. Be Present
Be in the moment. Be present! Don’t multi-task!
Imagine you check your phone every 5 seconds in a conversation. That suggests your phone is more important than the person you’re talking to.
The fact that your phone is visible can lower the quality of the conversation. Even if you’re not using it!
3. Ask Open-ended Questions
Ask questions that will get them to give a longer more complex answer.
Ask questions beginning with the words: Who, what, when, where or how. Because they get the person to elaborate and talk more about their experiences.
Avoid questions starting with the word ‘do’.
You will almost always get a rubbish answer like ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
‘Do you like football?’
End of conversation…
Do you sometimes hear another person talking and can’t wait for them to finish, so you can start talking again?
It’s probably because you’re not listening to what they are saying.
Listen to people and they will respect you. The quietest person in the room is often the strongest, wisest and most in-control, because they’re listening.
Proverbs 17:27 says:
‘A truly wise person uses few words;’
5. Ask Deep Questions
Skip the small talk and ask deep questions about life.
Stop talking about the weather! Ask questions like:
What are your religious beliefs?
What is your greatest achievement?
What would you most like to do before you die?
6. Why? Why? Why?
Do the thing that you used to do as a child to annoy people. Say ‘why?’ to everything they say.
You will always get deeper answers from people!
Imagine you find out their biggest ambition is to live in China.
7. Compliment Them
Complimenting someone is a perfect way to start a conversation!
99% of people respond well to compliments. This leads to an immediate connection with them! You can then ask more questions about the thing you complimented.
Proverbs 12:25 says:
‘Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.’
If you struggle with conversations, use these tips and practice on random strangers. Improving the quality of a conversation is a skill. It’s impossible to master any skill unless you practice.
I am far from perfect when I have conversations. Sometimes, I don’t do any of these things! But when you have your next conversation, even using just one of these tips can make a big difference:)
And even if you have a rubbish conversation, it literally doesn’t matter! In any way!
